Despite significant investment in the UK’s NHS estate over the past two decades, most major hospital sites within it continue to be characterised by an apparently random juxtaposition of buildings and facilities of varying age, type, and quality which have been assembled in a largely ad hoc manner during this period and in many situations are co-located with older healthcare buildings dating back to the Victorian era and beyond.
