Abstract:

A computer simulation model was used to determine the effect of evacuation instructions of fire exits on the success of emergency evacuation procedures.

- In a fire emergency, a large amount of the time that should be used for evacuation is typically spent on investigation and social interaction, since many occupants do not initially believe a fire alarm is indicating a real fire (Sime, 1985).
- Little is known about the role of social processes in the collective action of people as they evacuate a building during an emergency.
- Understanding evacuation behavior can lead to improved policies and design, which will save lives.
