There are numerous different definitions of Sustainable Development (SD). The Brundtland definition is probably the most widely used and accepted definition: “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. One of the UK’s leading sustainable development charities, Forum for the Future, expand upon the theme of needs and quality of life stating that “sustainable development is a dynamic process which enables all people to realise their potential and to improve their quality of life in ways which simultaneously protect and enhance the Earth’s life support systems.”

The Healthcare Learning Network has adopted the UK government definition: “enabling all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations”1. The UK Sustainable Development strategy launched in March 2005 highlights five basic principles which will underpin a move towards a more sustainable society:

- Living within environmental limits
- Ensuring a strong, healthy and just society
- Achieving a sustainable economy
- Using sound science responsibly
- Promoting good governance
