Guidance Module 3 – Organisational benefits
There is a growing body of evidence that sensitive hospital design has a positive effect on patients, staff and visitors, and we know that a resource-efficient sustainable building leads to reduced ongoing operating costs.
Furthermore, investment in the long-term sustainability of the building should ensure that its useful life, and ongoing capital value, is maximised.
However, the benefits of a high quality sustainable building extend significantly beyond the building itself. For example, we know that the investment associated with new buildings can create significant additional facilities for the users and surrounding communities. NHS buildings can also make a positive contribution to public health by providing opportunities for exercise, promoting non-car based transport and reducing stress. Similarly, adopting a sustainable approach should encourage stronger local support and buy-in, generating positive publicity and attracting external partnerships and funding that can be used to enhance the project.
Finally, adopting a sustainable approach should help minimise and manage the project’s risks, whether associated with the design and approval processes, engagement with stakeholders or long-term ownership and operation of the building.
Contents:
