Resumen:

Telemedicine/telecare has attracted interest in Sweden for several reasons. There is a well - developed IT sector and competence among potential users. Health services are available to all on equal terms and therefore networking is easily implemented. The geographic distances and very sparsely populated areas restrict access to medicine and care. Finally, the next to zero growth economy sets economic limitations to increasing needs in healthcare of an ageing population.

Sweden is also a test ground for medical research using the tools of telemedicine. Besides the general access to healthcare, Sweden offers excellent possibilities to define patient populations and their families via registers. An example of a research database is presented in this overview.

"It is a general prediction in a number of countries that telemedicine/telecare applications will be very common within five to seven years and that results will be very positive."
Eriksson, Hakan; Terenius, Lars
