At present, an M7 or greater (M7+) earthquake in the Kanto region has a high degree of potential for causing devastating loss of life and property with greater global economic repercussions. The Earthquake Research Committee of Japan estimates that the probability of occurring such an earthquake in 30 years is 70%. In this background, Special Project for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation in Tokyo Metropolitan Area, which is sponsored by MEXT, has been carried out since 2007.
