Abstract:

Evidence-based practice is critical to patients, nurses, health care providers, and the health care system. For practitioners in the perioperative arena, the guideline for the prevention of surgical site infections released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee in 1999 provides an example of how research guides clinical practice.(1) Integrated throughout this guideline are ratings that grade existing scientific data and theoretical rationale. The main objective of this practice guideline is to reduce the incidence of surgical site infections and improve patient outcomes. The guideline also provides the foundation for practice decisions related to preventing surgical site infections regardless of the clinical setting.
