Introducción:
The roots of steam sterilisation go back to the findings of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch in the 19th century. Currently, sterilisation system users can
resort to a huge potential of sound knowledge.
Next to the multitude of scientific publications and field reports that usually deal with specific problems, the state of the art and the state of knowledge about the complete field of steam sterilisation is laid down in standards. They represent a concise reference work available for users ? whether developer, planner, purchaser or operator. Most of the documents originate from European organisations and serve as criterion for the compliance with Medical Device Directive (MDD) or the corresponding national regulations. These European standards, however, increasingly attract worldwide
attention. This trend will be promoted by the current harmonisation of European standards (CEN) and international standards (International Organization for Standardization (ISO).Achterberg, Dieter
